Ancestor memolrial rites in Korea 본문
It's not an easy topic to talk about.
It's better, I think, to get some background information rather than to jump into the subject directly.
Confucianism was the main ideology of Chosun Dynasty (1392-1910). That was the basic rule of King's governance and people's way of life.
And, one of the core teaching of Confucianism is respecting old people. That includes respecting the elders who you don't know and ancestors. And respecting ancestors become a very formal rite and have very sophisticated manual.
The main rule of the rite is that the first male offspring has to conduct the ceremony. So if the edlest son, the manager of the rite, has no male descendant, he has to get one. Adoption from the other family members is common and sometimes he get a second wife.
This is, however, old story.
Now, the Christians don't care about the rules of the rite and most people think that any second or female offspring can manage the rite.
